Tag Orders
Auto tag orders by creating rules based on conditions of the order, products, shipping, or customer.
How it works
You can create rules based on almost any data point you see in the Shopify order, product, or customer page (shipping country, product tags, etc).
When Order Automator processes an order (by default on new orders), it compares your rules to the Shopify order data at that point in time, then tags the order if the rule matches the data.
You can add dynamic tags to the order by using Tag Variables.
Shopify tag requirements:
- Order tags can have up to 40 characters
- Shopify recommends to only use letters, numbers, and hyphens in tags
- Some other characters are accepted but tags with special characters may get rejected
- See Shopify tag documentation for more details
If a rule isn't working as you expect, see Troubleshooting Tag Rules.
Why tag orders?
The main reason people tag orders is to organize orders for quick searches.
Some examples:
- Identify special orders, for example orders over $999
- Use order tags to communicate with other apps (tell an app not to fulfill orders with tag X)
- Create shortcuts of a list of orders that meet certain conditions
- Tag international orders or orders by country
- "It helps us to easily and quickly see our orders by country." (5 star reviewer)

Send an email notification when a tag rule matches
After you create a tag rule click the mail icon to set up an order notification.
You can have an email sent when that tag rule triggers.
See How to Send Custom Order Notifications in Shopify for a detailed guide.
Testing tag rules
After you create a tag rule, it's a good idea to process the rule on a single order to confirm that the tag is applied as expected. See Testing Orders here.
